Katharina’s Case Study

Lorem Ipsum

Katharina has been a powerchair user for over 20 years. Energetic, determined and fiercely independent, she’s always looked for equipment that supports her lifestyle rather than limits it.

In Summer 2025, she was selected to compete in “Race Across Europe in a Series 5” – a documentary challenge that saw four powerchair users travel from London to Italy using only public transport and a Series 5. Katharina’s route took her through France from north to south, fulfilling long-held dreams of visiting Paris and driving along the beach in Nice.

Putting the Series 5 to the test in Berlin

After the race, Katharina took the Series 5 home to Berlin for two weeks to test it in her own, everyday environment. She didn’t hold back.

During that time, she covered 522 km, regularly pushing the 40 km range to its limits with long days out across the city. Travel on Berlin’s S-Bahn, U-Bahn and trams became routine. The Series 5 handled the platform gaps and tight spaces in the carriages with ease, making public transport smoother and less stressful than she was used to.

Outdoors, the difference was even more noticeable. Katharina took the Series 5 into woodland areas and off the usual paths she’s restricted to in her everyday chair. On one occasion, she was even able to go on a bike ride with a friend, something that had previously been impossible.

Her current, everyday chair tops out at 6 km/h with a limited range. A second chair, capable of 12 km/h, has been out of action since January 2025 and, in her words, “becomes unstable at higher speeds anyway.” The Series 5 offered Katharina both speed and stability in an all-in-one hybrid set up.

The importance of the right setup

When Katharina first tested the Series 5, she wasn’t sure it was the right fit for her.  The Series 5 is a powerful, rear-wheel drive chair with highly adjustable drive settings – very different from her previous front-wheel drive model.

The turning point came when she arrived in London at the start line, for Race Across Europe. Here, Freedom One Life engineer, Chris spent time going through the drive modes in detail and showing Katharina how to customise the settings. Adjusting acceleration to suit her reduced wheel spin in small spaces and transformed the handling. With the right setup in place, she experienced what she calls her first “speed sightseeing” tour of London, and really experienced what the chair was capable of.

The experience highlighted something crucial: the Series 5 isn’t a one-size-fits-all device. Acceleration, turning speed and responsiveness can all be tailored with different drive profiles, creating a truly personalised driving experience.

Built for real life

Beyond speed and range, what stood out most to Katharina was the robustness and build quality.

She lives in an area of Berlin filled with cobblestones and uneven kerbs. Her previous chair has suffered repeated wheel failures on these surfaces. The Series 5’s ability to tackle these with ease isn’t a lifestyle upgrade, but is actually essential for reliably reaching the supermarket and navigating daily life.

Another feature that changed her routine was the integrated charger. Instead of planning around heavy external batteries, she travelled with a single cable. That practical detail gave her the freedom to be spontaneous. She could stay overnight with friends without advance preparation or extend a day out without calculating whether she had enough charge to get home. The mental load reduced significantly.

Design matters too. Katharina rejects the idea that disabled people should settle for purely clinical, functional equipment. The Series 5, in her words, “feels like home.” Friends commented that the chair stood out in a way that reflected her personality instead of limiting it. She felt safe, secure and comfortable, and even friends who briefly tried the chair remarked on the same sense of stability.

Fighting for the Right Chair

Two days after returning to Berlin, Katharina began her application with German health insurance, fully aware that approval for a specific model can take up to 18 months.

Like many systems around the world, funding decisions focus strictly on clinical necessity rather than quality of life. Extended range, higher speeds or spontaneous travel aren’t considered valid arguments. Instead, her case centres on durability over cobblestones, repeated mechanical failures with previous chairs and the need for a stable, robust device to navigate her environment safely.

Looking Ahead

The chair has already changed what feels possible for Katharina, with longer days out, spontaneous overnight stays with only a charging cable and activities that have previously been just out of reach.

Her dream of completing the Way of St. James in Spain now feels achievable. With its range, power and recline functionality, she believes the Series 5 would even allow her to sleep comfortably in the chair for parts of the journey.

Katharina describes herself as optimistic, persistent and energetic, and she pushes her equipment to match that energy. She is determined to secure insurance approval this year.

In her own words:

“The Series 5 is the best wheelchair I have ever driven, and I am prepared to fight for it.”
